What is Agrasys?

Agrasys S.L. is a technology-based AgriFood company which uses advanced plant breeding and biotechnology techniques to develop novel crop varieties with added value. These new crop varieties are targeted at specific products or market opportunities which have been identified by the company or by business partners.

The company was founded in 2005 as a spin-off from the CSIC, the Spanish National Research Council. In 2008 Agrasys received investment from UNINVEST S.G.E.C.R., S.A. a venture capital company specializing in technology-based investments.

Current projects and products of the company are directed at the sectors of natural functional foods and biofuel crops. In the food area, the first product being brought to market is a novel cereal type, tritordeum, produced by hybridization between durum wheat and a wild barley species.

Tritordeum offers several functional and nutritional traits allowing the development of innovative healthy food products. Tritordeum products are being brought to market under the registered trade name Vivagran®. In the biofuel area, the company is using its breeding and biotechnology expertise to produce improved energy crop varieties.

Agrasys has its main office in the Parc Cientific in Barcelona and performs its breeding research in Cordoba and food-related research in Barcelona, Cordoba and other research centres.
